UTSC Instructional Centre - Past Project

Description

The first building on UTSC’s north campus, the Instructional Centre is designed to enhance learning and student life. The wide entry courtyard and street-front cafe open to a dramatic four-storey atrium that features balconies, a rooftop garden, and a two-storey glass bridge, bringing in natural light and creating informal gathering spaces for social interaction both inside and out. The atrium also houses the largest art commission by UTSC, a contemporary sculpture by Sobey Award-winning artists Daniel Young and Christian Giroux.

The building is home to the Departments of Management, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Co-operative Learning. State-of-the-art technology has been used in classrooms and lecture halls, including Canada’s largest undergraduate finance lab which resembles a high tech trading floor.  Lecture halls are designed with advanced digital capabilities and to modern theatrical standards, with careful attention to sightlines, acoustics, and ventilation.

The Instructional Centre is certified as LEED Silver standard and features green roofs and rooftop solar panels. The dramatic vertical and horizontal sunshades on the exterior minimize glare and solar heat gain. Designed by the multi-award-winning Canadian firm Diamond and Schmitt Architects, who also designed the adjacent Environmental Science and Chemistry Building, the 165,000-square-foot (15,300-square-metres), four-storey building opened in 2011.
